An Appalachian Legend

HENNY FAIRE Co. wildcrafted bath & beauty products are inspired by our home in Northern Appalachia and one inspiring Appalachian woman.

Henrietta "Henny" was born in a hollow at the edge of an Eastern Pennsylvania patch town in 1917. When not chasing chickens and generally causing mayhem, she loved to forage the hills for wild mushrooms, berries, and herbs. Her wayfaring father (rumored to be of "gypsy" blood) taught Henny the medicinal uses of these plants. Her handsome mother tolerated the curious child's concocting, occasionally allowing her daughter to try some new "beauty" preparation on her delicate Polish complexion.

When Henny was 14, she was struck with tuberculosis and sent to a sanatorium in the Western part of the state. Here she made many friends with whom she shared her love of foraging. The girls concocted remedies not only to support their health and recovery, but to enhance their beauty.

Henny and her husband Albert never had children, but Henny lived to the ripe age of 95 and became "Aunt Henny" to two generations of children in her patch town. To some of the local girls, she passed along her foraging and compounding skills and her love of what she called, "life's finer things". Today, those girls are women, and we are the heads, hands, and hearts behind HENNY FAIRE Co.

Henny loved her Appalachian home -- its people and its nature. We couldn't use her name and story if we didn't honor this love in all we do. That's why a portion of our proceeds goes to charities that promote community and environmental renewal in Greater Appalachia.

Like Henny, we proudly use wild-harvested native Eastern botanicals in our products. And while she would tell us we "fuss too much," we formulate exclusively with biodegradable ingredients and without parabens, phthalates, formaldehydes, sulfates, or anything harsh.
